Passato e futuro

I must confess I am a little traditionalist and bound to our historical and artistic heritage, so I feel much more proud and admired towards the masterpieces that history has left us, than towards those daring signs of a new architectural age we strive to appreciate today.

Lately, while I was working at the structure of a building of this kind, I was laughing at the thought we should update the old common place “to invest in bricks (real estate)” into the new “to invest in plasterboard coated with Alucobond”.

However technology and building materials are evolving and little by little (maybe) I will appreciate qualities and benefits of a house with a wholly transparent facade, or covered by an inox steel net that should allow new species of creepers to grow without being grilled by the summer sun.

Then you can easily imagine how happy I was to visit this building yard during my holidays...
It’s a small rural construction, made with hand-cut and “dry-placed” (assembled with nearly no mortar) stones, surrounded by an old olive-groove. The structure will be completely restored using the same skilful and simple technique, moreover it will be provided with all necessary plant.
Let’s add ADSL and a wireless connection and ... my sweet little home for the future is there!

Maia ci vizia troppo!!

Oh well, here Maia's spoiling us too much...

Insalata di gamberi e dentice - Salad with shrimps and dentex

In a pan with cold water add onion, bay leaves, celery, carrot, half lemon and shrimps then cook for two minutes passed boiling point. Separately boil dentex in the same way (cooking time depends on the size of the fish). Fillet dentex and remove shell from shrimps exept for the tail. Make a bed with rucola raw chopped carrots, salad, celery, and lay fish and shrimps on it. Prepare dressing with olive oil, lemon juice and salt and pour it all over. Serve at room temperature.

Introduction: I neglected to explain to my readers in Italy what SP11 is...I'm sorry so now I try to put it right! For you no need to tell it again I suppose!
And now about the questionnaire...it's so difficult to say what I like and what I don't, what I desire and what I hate. Within the sphere of knitting and crocheting, my choices follow inspiration and curiosity, moreover I've seen how even the most seemingly insignificant yarns and colors gain a new life if blended like Ferrida does so skilfully. After all aren't these the most interesting challenges? Here are my answers at last!!!

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I have a preference for natural fibers, wool, cotton, linen. I've never tried silk.
Preferisco lavorare a maglia con filati naturali, lana, cotone lino. Mai provata la seta.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I sewed a tube shaped case to keep all my tools together.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I learned to knit when I was 10 years old, I read a booklet by Phildar written for children and I followed my first pattern that was a T shaped sweater in garter stitch for my doll. I consider myself self-taught but with some good advices, and I believe my level is advanced.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
I don't have any wishlist.

5. What's your favorite scent?
Among my favourite scents are earth moistened by rain, and lavender.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I can survive even without sweets, so my tooth isn't particularly sweet. I like dark chocolate and "amaretti" (pastries made with bitter almonds).

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I crochet just a little according to inspiration, I sew just to mend or fix hems and zippers, seldom something wearable exept carnival costumes, mostly home accessories. I don't spin but...who knows?

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I listen to my favourite Italian artists De Andrè and Gaber, all the classics from Mozart through Gershwin to The Queen. I have a curiosity about popular folk music from every region or country.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
Reds appeal to me, and although pastel shades are not for me, I find them very beautiful when blended with browns and dark greens.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
Me, my husband, two daughters 10 and 3 years old, no pets....almost none.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Yes all exept for ponchos, but I knitted one for my elder girl.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

If I only find it interesting and funny enough, I could knit almost everything but I knit mostly sweaters and (what a shame!) I NEVER knitted a sock in my life!

13. What are you knitting right now?

I'm crocheting my "Chenille mistery" aka "Penelope's shroud".

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yes they are so precious and unique.
Mi piace ricevere regali fatti a mano perchè sono preziosi e unici.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I prefer large diameters needles in plastic and I think that circular are better, smaller one in aluminium.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
None of them, I don't miss them too.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
Am I an alien if I confess I don't have any UFO?

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Besides religious and civilian holidays November is our "family month". Are three birthdays enough?
Tre compleanni sono abbastanza, o no?

19. Is there anything that you collect?
...let me think... sure! un-ironed shirts!!

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
No knitting magazine subscriptions at this moment, I long to have some other book by E.Zimmermann, and Interwave Knits Winter 06 issue, which contains a wonderful pattern by Eunny Lang , "Venezia Pullover".

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
Yes, I would like to try Fair Isle knitting sooner or later.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
...actually....no I'm not. It seems to me an addictive kind of knitting, I could be caught forever! My foot measurements is 37 (italian size).

23. When is your birthday?
May, 3.
Compio gli anni il 3 maggio.

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?
Not yet, I'm waiting my invitation for September.

Connected!

I didn't want to disappoint my secret pal, so I did my best to work on the questionnaire and to keep in touch with the news going on SP11! First of all the buttons...which one to choose?
As a child I used to start every game with a "conta" (count) to decide who is going to be "it", so here I am again!

Ambarabà cicì cocò,
tre civette sul comò,

che facevano l'amore
con la figlia del dottore,

il dottore si ammalò,
Ambarabà .................cicì..........
COCO'!!
(Questionnaire is in progress!)

Saluti!

(I'm no longer here!---but there ---> )

I want to say goodbye properly, because I’m preparing to join my girls who are already on holiday…and I can’t wait any longer!
At work:
Goodbye to my amaranthine armchair that will surely be lighter and fresher!
Goodbye to you architects, expecially O.D., give your creative minds a rest! I dedicate to you my first bathe ! I say goodbye also to all the engineers who manage in some miraculous way to give staediness to your most fanciful and daring buildings, and I incourage them: never give up!
Goodbye to a very special architect, she knows it!
On the web:
Now for you who come here to read, to smile (I hope), to comment and to draw your inspirations…thank you for your company! Your virtual, but real presence was both a support and a spur to me!
I leave everything at home, needles, yarns, hairpins, hooks, computer! I’m only taking my camera and the book I'm reading, sandals, my swimsuit, a “sciammerica” (a large and fresh dress), a smile on my face….

(... perhaps I need my laptop to download photos...)
Wherever you are, relax, ease your mind, change a bit your habits, see you soon and have nice holidays too!
