Mi sento un po' pitagorica

Nota tecnica : per eseguire il pentagono con 5 ferri a due punte ho disposto tre lati della figura su ferri singoli, ed i due lati restanti sul quarto ferro; in tal modo mi resta ancora un ferro per lavorare in tondo. Il lavoro procede chiudendo progressivamente il buco centrale grazie ad una successione costante di diminuzioni fatte su ogni giro alla fine di ciascun segmento della figura.

Per mostrarvi il lavoro in una fase intermedia mi sono fermata proprio nel punto in cui usando i cinque ferri su ciascuno di essi si trova un segmento del pentagono e, mentre scattavo la foto, nel vedere la figura formata dai ferri … mi è venuto in mente quel genio di Pitagora!
Mi sono accorta della stella a cinque punte !!
Magari a voi ricorda una famigerata sigla…invece per i pitagorici era un simbolo di perfezione che racchiudeva nelle sue proporzioni il numero magico fi, la famosa sezione aurea. Per non impegolarmi in un argomento arduo rimando i curiosi a cercare qui e qui.

Il rapporto aureo è diffusissimo in natura nell’arte e nell’architettura. Da spettatori restiamo incantati di fronte ad un fiore come davanti al Partenone, percependo una sensazione di geometrica armonia.
Siamo condizionati da canoni estetici e da modelli culturali o c’è qualcosa di più profondo nell’inconscio che ci porta inevitabilmente ad apprezzare la divina proporzione?
Non lo so, so solo che lo “swirled pentagon” mi piace un sacco!

Technical note: to knit the pentagon with double pointed needles I put three sides on three single needles, and two sides on fourth needle; so I used the last needle to work in the round. Work goes on with the central hole constantly narrowing just decreasing one stitch at the end of each section of the pentagon.

To show you the work in an intermediate stage I stopped exactly when I had every section on a different needle, and just while I was taking the photo, I saw the shape made by the needles… and I remembered of Pythagoras the genius! I realized I had a five pointed star!!
That symbol reminds the Italians of a notorious terrorist group…but it was a symbol of perfection to Pythagoreans, because it shows in its proportions the magic number phi (the well known golden-section).
I won’t get tangled in such a difficult subject, I suggest those of you who are curious to go here and here. (links to sites in English)

The golden-section is widely spread in nature, art and architecture. As spectators we are spellbound as we look both to a flower and to the Parthenon, because we feel a geometric harmony.
Are we influenced by aesthetical rules and cultural models, or is there anything deeper in our subconscious that asks us to prefer this divine ratio?
I don’t know, I only know I like the “swirled pentagon” a lot!

Ritorno alla lana

Non c'è niente che sia comparabile alla morbidezza, all'elasticità, alla leggerezza, e anche al profumo della lana!
Eseguendo lo shell tank e Luna Rossa ho notato come sia molto più diffcile lavorare trecce e punti fantasia con un tipo di filato rigido come il cotone. Ora ho deciso, non mi importa se fa caldo, io ritorno alla lana! Ho pescato dalla mia scorta un bel colore, variegato come un gelato all'amarena, e gli ho aggiunto qualche gomitolo crema.
Ho già iniziato a fare lo "Swirled pentagon pullover" di Norah Gaughan (sono un pò fissata...lo ammetto). Per ora non ci sono intoppi e mi diverto molto a fare lo sprone composto da pentagoni con il bianco. Cercherò di fare qualche foto durante l'esecuzione con i ferri a due punte, è una tecnica molto interessante...(ovviamente dal mio punto di vista!)



Nothing compares to the softness, elasticity, lightness and scent of wool!
While knitting shell tank and luna rossa I verified how cables and fancy stitches are made more difficult by using a stiff yarn like cotton. Now I made up my mind, I don't care if it's hot, I come back to wool! I fished a beautiful color out of my stash, streaked like a black cherry ice cream, and I added few balls of white.
I started to knit the "Swirled pentagon pullover" by Norah Gaughan (I'm a bit obsessed...I know). At present there are no hitches and I'm having fun knitting the yoke in white using such pentagonal construction. I hope to take some pics while knitting with double pointed needles, it's a very interesting technique...(from my point of view, of course!)

Non vedevo l'ora di scrivere questa parola...FINE... e così ho perfino preparato questo post con un pò di anticipo pregustando il momento in cui avrei schiacciato l’icona "pubblica". Tra tutte le prove, gli errori ed i ripensamenti, ed in più la mole di lavoro che mi ha inghiottito negli ultimi giorni, non aspettavo altro! Oltretutto vi ho anche un pò depistato per quanto riguarda il colore del top, non è rosso come le foto precedenti lasciavano credere, ma piuttosto ...fucsia! E' colpa mia che faccio le foto ad orari indecenti, se uso il flash si appiattiscono le trecce, se non lo uso virano i colori... Comunque è andata, è finito, è fatto...basta!
Qualche annotazione "tecnica":

• Cotone usato : Sesia Cablè 5 (50g = 215m) messo doppio
• il davanti è stato fatto in un solo pezzo;
• ho allungato le spalline di 1 cm sul davanti e sul dietro perchè il giro manica del modello è troppo aderente per i miei gusti;
• sul bordo obliquo del davanti non ho usato l'avviamento provvisorio alla EZ. Ho fatto un test prima di sfilare per l’ultima volta il lavoro e, riprendendo i punti per fare il bordo a coste, l’attacco veniva lento e irregolare (la tecnica su un bordo orizzontale però va benissimo);
• sono contenta di aver usato la finitura proposta dal modello per lo scollo ed il giro manica, si tratta semplicemente di 4 ferri a maglia rasata rovescia. In altre occasioni ho impiegato il punto gambero con l'uncinetto, ottenendo un bordo rigido... ma soprattutto antipatico, con una naturale inclinazione ad arrotolarsi!!!
• ...tutto bene ciò che finisce bene!

I was looking forward to write this word…END…and so I prepered this post in advance, foretasting the moment in which I would click on “publish” button. After all tests, errors, second thoughts, and the amount of work that has swallowed me recently, I was longing just this! Besides all, I headed you off a little about tank color, it’s not red as previous photos showed, but …rather fuchsia! It’s my fault, I take photos in shoking hours, if I use flash cables flatten, if I don’t use it colors change….
Anyway it’s gone, finished, done…stop!

Few “technical” notes :

• Cotton : Sesia cablè 5 (50g = 215m) two strands held together
• front is one piece;
• I shaped armholes differently, making height 1 cm longer for both front and back, because pattern measures were too tight according to my taste;
• I didn’t use EZ’ provisional cast on to make front sloping edge. Before frogging it for the last time, I made a test and picked up stitches to make ribbing, but junction turned out too loose and not very regular (I think the techique works properly for horizontal edge);
• I’m pleased with the finishing around neck and armholes proposed in the pattern, it's a simple band made of 4 rows in reverse stocking stitch. In other projects I used a crochet finishing in crab stitch (reverse single crochet), and I got a stiff border…rather “nasty” , with a natural gift for rolling inwards!!!
• ...all well that ends well!

Qualcosa sta andando storto.....

Non ho fatto progressi ....il mio lavoro sta prendendo una brutta piega...ma dopo averci pensato su un pò ci sono arrivata....

C'E' UN ORRORE...OOPS UN ERRORE NELLE SPIEGAZIONI!!!!

Non si tratta di "misunderstandig", in parole povere non ho capito male...è proprio una indicazione erronea! Si tratta degli aumenti progressivi collocati tra il pannello a trecce e il davanti lato destro che vengono descritti così:

increase 1 st every other RS row 29 times

aumentare 1 maglia per 29 volte su ogni altro ferro sul diritto del lavoro.

Il risultato è questo...un davanti che si apre a corolla!!! Se il risultato sperato è quello di mantenere i bordi diritti, la progressione degli aumenti lato destro deve essere identica a quella delle diminuzioni del pannello a trecce. Così facendo le trecce migreranno a sinistra, il davanti destro prenderà il posto lasciato dal pannello a trecce, i bordi rimarranno intatti, e io vivrò felice e contenta! Per farla breve io correggerò così:

increase 1 st every 4 rows 29 times on RS

aumentare 1 maglia ogni 4 ferri per 29 volte sul diritto del lavoro.

....e purtroppo inizierò da capo....

I didn't make any progress...my work is taking a turn for the worse...but after brooding over a bit, I got it...

IT'S A HORROR...OOPS AN ERROR IN THE PATTERN!!!!!!!

No misunderstanding, it's not my fault...it's a deceptive direction! It 's about increases ratio between cable panel and right front that's explained as follows:

increase 1 st every other RS row 29 times

Risult is this...a flaring front!!! If expected piece must have even borders, then increase ratio should be the same as cable panel decrease. If you do so, cables will shift on the left, right front will take the place left by cable panel, borders will keep even, and I will live in peace!
In a few words I will correct pattern as follows:

increase 1 st every 4 rows 29 times on RS

....unfortunately I have to start it again....

Shell tank : aggiornamento

Ho lavorato un pò in questi giorni, e mi sono accertata che il cotone per lo shell tank mi basterà. Ho finito il dietro in fretta (era a maglia rasata senza alcuna difficoltà), e mi sono lanciata sul davanti con spirito Zimmermanniano...e cioè alquanto sperimentale! La prova di quanto dico sta nel fatto che l'ho già iniziato da capo due volte....ma ne vale la pena! La spiegazione del libro direbbe di lavorare il davanti in tre pezzi distinti e di cucirli alla fine e, per finire, di riprendere le maglie dal bordo inferiore del davanti lavorandolo a coste 2/2. Io ho osato le seguenti modifiche:

1. provo a fare il davanti in un solo pezzo
2. non riprendo i punti per il bordo, ma tento un avviamento provvisorio secondo le istruzioni di EZ
3. nell'esecuzione del pannello a trecce ho sostituito agli aumenti con filo gettato (YO), gli aumenti eseguiti riprendento il filo orizzontale tra due punti (M1), in questo modo non vengono buchi! (o forse erano intenzionali !?)

Potrei dire anche che le spiegazioni del libro sono chiare, ma andrebbero illustrate di più con foto di dettaglio dei punti più critici.

I knitted just a bit during these days, and now I'm sure cotton is enough to end this project. I ended back piece soon, it was plain St st without difficulties, then I dashed myself knitting front in EZ'style...rather experimental! Evidence of this is the fact that I already knitted the start twice...but it was worth while! According to pattern, front should be knitted in three pieces to sew together at the end, front border shoul be made by picking up stitches and knit 2x2 ribbing. I dared the following changes:

1. I make front in one piece
2. I don't pick up stitches to knit front border, but I try provisional cast on according to EZ's instructions
3. While knitting cabled panel I replaced yarn overs (YO) with lifted increase (M1), so to avoid holes! (maybe they were made on purpose !?)

I tell you pattern is clear enough, but it should be better illustrated with detailed photos of the critical points.

Attrezzatura

Ho deciso cosa fare...parto con un top-conchiglia (shell tank), ho già il cotone in un colore deciso ed estivo ...incrocio le dita e spero che basti!
Ed il cappotto?...il grosso è fatto, mancano le finiture!
E la borsa?...ho ordinato il cotone nel mio colore preferito, e non ho tempo di ritirarlo!

I made up my mind...I will start with the Shelll tank, yarn ready from my stash in a bright summer color...and I trust in my luck to have yarn enough (It's almost a rhyme!...is it?)
My coat?...the big work is done, finishing left!
My bag?...I ordered cotton in my favourite color, but I'm lacking in time to withdraw it!

Overdose

Non ho potuto resistere alla tentazione di ordinare il libro Knitting Nature della ormai iper-citata Norah Gaughan, dopo averlo scovato nella sezione dedicata ai libri in inglese di IBS Internet Book Shop. Così quando finalmente l'ho sfogliato ho potuto appagare tanta curiosità e buttarmi in un Eden di pentagoni, esagoni, motivi a spirale, fillotassi (ovvero la regola che determina la disposizione delle foglie), frattali e onde...
I modelli proposti (tanti e di difficoltà variabile da media a ...aiutatemi!!) sono portabili e funzionali e non soltanto concepiti per stupire, e anche se qualcosa di puramente decorativo c'è, non guasta affatto. Sono troppo "intrecciati" i maglioni da uomo, che già sono estenuanti da lavorare per le dimensioni! Una bella novità invece le gonne, soprattutto la "Snapping Turtle Skirt".
Mi chiedevo poi che tipo fosse questa magliaia creativa...ora lo so! Sorridente, piccolina e un pò morbida...
E ora cosa farò? Sono nella più totale confusione...una overdose di novità...sfoglierò ancora e ancora per un bel pò!

I couldn't resist from buying Knitting Nature book by iper-famous Norah Gaughan, I found it in IBS (Internet Book Shop) english section. When finally it was in my hands I satisfied my curiosity and I plunged in a sort of heavenly world of pentagons, hexagons spirals, Phyllotaxis, Fractal and waves...
Patterns offered, (many and in degrees of difficulty from medium to "God help me!"), are weareable and functional, and not only thought to surprise, and even though something is purely ornamental is well done. Manly sweaters are too cabled, and they are already so exhausting to knit for their size! A nice novelty to me are skirts, expecially the "Snapping Turtle Skirt".
I wondered what kind of woman this creative knitter was.. now I know! She's smiling, little and with soft curves...
What I will do now? I am totally confused...an overdose of new stuff...I will glance throough this book again ang again!
